Poem For A Thursday: Seth

All You Who Sleep Tonight

All you who sleep tonight
Far from the ones you love,
No hand to left or right,
And emptiness above--
Know that you aren't alone.
The whole world shares your tears,
Some for two nights or one,
And some for all their years.
-Vikram Seth

This is the title poem from Vikram Seth's poetry collection of 1990.

I don't know about you, but I'm eagerly awaiting his A Suitable Girl, which keeps getting promised to us and keeps not arriving. I suspect it's perfectionism on his part that is holding him back. Vik! I'm sure it's very good! Let us have it!

On the other hand is it perfectionism that's kept me from completing my post on my current spin book? (Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own.) In my case, it's probably just laziness...

Jennifer (the founder of Poem for a Thursday) is featuring U. A. Fanthorpe this week.

  1. I've not read A Suitable Boy. It is enormous but I hear it reads pretty fast. Do you concur?

    1. It is enormous, but I didn't really feel it (except perhaps in my wrist...) It really just drew me along and I remember it as a great read.

  2. i've looked at "Boy" from the corner of my eye while passing it in the library... still can't decide if it has something to tell me or not...

    1. Oh, it probably doesn't have anything to tell you...it's a fairly conventional tale of a girl figuring out which boy to marry. But I found it enormously (word not chosen entirely by accident) entertaining...

    2. There is something to be said for enormously entertaining, I think....
