That's Henryk Sienkiewicz' Quo Vadis for me. A good choice. I'd been half-following along the readalong earlier this year and had it in mind. Maybe I'll reread Petronius to get in the proper space. Hubert already is:
Because when life hands you a bowl of (local!) pie cherries... 😉
yum
ReplyDeleteThe pie got a little burned, alas...
DeleteSorry, I anticipated you and replied on the original post. Do you like high drama and emotional angst? Do you like getting into the minds of crazy people? Does the early Christian era interest you? Then you'll like this novel. Can't wait to hear what you think!
ReplyDeleteI know that some of the recent classical scholarship has been, well, Nero, not so bad. Ha! Now that's what I really have a hard time getting my head around...that's not the way I was taught it!
Delete!! consider my interest stimulated!
DeleteI struggled to read this book for the entire first half of the book. I finally began to enjoy the story, halfway in. It's markedly pro-Christian, though after seeing the debauchery of late Rome, I found that Christianity was desperately needed.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep that in mind--it gets better! I haven't started yet, though.
DeleteLucky number six! I had no idea this book was written so long ago. I assumed it was mid-20th century epic...maybe because of the film. Sounds like its something to get really lost in. I hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI've never seen the film. I may try after I finish the book, but I hear it's pretty soapy.
