I read Bury My Heart over 30 years ago, but I still think about it. Very powerful, heartrending stuff. It was the book that finally got me wondering if someone had written about Australia's First Nations history...

DeleteMartin Eden is amazing. I have just checked out Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas from my library, but it is actually not on my classics list (hmmm). Perhaps I should put it there. The Perez Galdos also sounds interesting. I have only read Tristana by him so far, but two other books by him I want to read are not That Bringas Woman. I am definitely curious.
ReplyDeleteI read Fortunata & Jacinta by Perez Galdos & really liked it, so I have hopes for That Bringas Woman.
DeleteYes, Fortunata and Jacinta is on my TBR list, and it's great to hear that you liked it. But, the one I really want to read is actually Galdos' Miau. I have heard it might be a satire on bureaucracy. That is completely irresistible to me.

DeleteI've read nothing of Eudora Welty, but I think I would find her work to sound like family---I do have lots of kinfolks in the South.
ReplyDeleteI've definitely liked the Welty I've read, but I do think Mississippi isn't Texas--my mom was from Texas and I have a bunch of cousins around Dallas. Texans are their own thing... ;-)
DeleteI’ve read a couple on your list - Passing and The Heart of a Dog. I have Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee on my TBR and just recently added Elmer Gantry to the list. Good luck on the spin! 😊
