Book Beginning: Amélie Nothomb's Pétronille

Intoxication doesn't just happen. It's an art, one that requires talent and application. Haphazard drinking leads nowhere.
... is the beginning of Amélie Nothomb's Pétronille.

I have to admit I laughed out loud at that opening and it does go on to be a funny novel. Amélie (the character, not the novelist, and don't confuse them...) is looking for someone to drink champagne with. Surprise, surprise. She finds somebody.

Book Beginnings on Fridays is a bookish meme hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader. To play, quote the beginning of the book you're currently reading, give the author and title, and any thoughts if you like. Here's to you! Bottoms up!

  1. Oh, I love the tone of the beginning. It does sound funny. Fascinating that she chose to use the same name for her character.

  2. That is a great beginning! I haven't heard of the book before. This week I am spotlighting Close to the Edge by Dawn Ryder. Happy reading!

  4. Sounds great. I read one of her books Tokyo Fiancée (she is Belgian and I live here so thought it would be a good idea). I did like her writing. Should maybe try another one!

    1. I saw the movie Tokyo Fiancée a couple of years ago & liked it, which was what made me decide to try one of her books.
