Sunday Salon

Where I Was

The Other Reader & I took a trip to Chicago last week, my home town and where we met. It was my first time back in a few years. We visited friends, and wandered around and were tourists.

The Glessner House. The neighbors didn't like it, I wonder why...

A more typical Prairie Avenue mansion
The Baha'i Temple. This was the limit of my bike rides when I was a kid.
The Hippos and Rhinos Bridge! The Hippos and Rhinos Bridge! As my friend excitedly shouted...
Bridge detail. Note hippo, rhino.
The South Shore Cultural Center, where Barack and Michelle held their wedding reception. But not before a certain other couple...

The CTA stop near a friend's. Not my neighborhood, but much more like where I grew up than all those other pictures. One of only three CTA stops at grade level, announced my friend, an engineer.

Earlier Reading

I did some Chicago reading and posts in preparation for the trip!

Plans

I signed up for #20BooksOfSummer at 746Books. Will I read twenty books this summer? Oh, probably. Will they be exactly those twenty books? Hmm... But they're all such good books!

And how about you?

    1. It is a great city, with a lot of fun stuff to do. (Said the notorious Chicago booster.) Thanks for coming by!

  2. We visit Chicago frequently as my son and daughter-in-law live there. I love the Art Institute there.

My favorite book set in Chicago is The Coast of Chicago by Stuart Dybek. It's a collection of short stories.

    Enjoy your week!

    1. We went to the Art Institute, too, this trip--it's hard not to, such a great museum.

I've never read the Dybek; I really should read it. I've heard such good things about it.

  3. I drove through Chicago once on a greyhound bus. All I remember is very tall buildings. Otherwise, all I know is what I watched on ER. :D

Maybe some day I'll visit and actually be able to exit the vehicle. But not during winter.

    1. Definitely not during winter!

There are a lot of great things, though. Did I mention I was a booster?...
