Classics Club Spin #26

It's time for the latest Classics Club spin, Numero 26! You probably know the rules. I'm running low on books from my original list, (and skipping a couple for a spin) but I have started assembling a second list so I'll pick a few of those and then there will be some doubling up.

Let's go straight to the list of books:

From my first Classics Club list:

1.) Samuel Butler/The Way of All Flesh

2.) Willa Cather/A Lost Lady

3.) Willa Cather/One of Ours

4.) W. Somerset Maugham/The Razor's Edge

5.) Sir Walter Scott/Count Robert of Paris

6.) R. L. Stevenson/The Black Arrow

7.) Honoré de Balzac/Cousin Bette

8.) Johann von Goethe/Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship

9.) Henryk Sienkewicz/Quo Vadis

10.) George Bernard Shaw/Major Barbara

From that new Classics Club list:

11.) R. L. Stevenson/Travels With A Donkey

12.) Barbara Tuchman/A Distant Mirror

13.) John Ruskin/Unto This Last

14.) Thomas de Quincey/Lake Poets

15.) Dee Brown/Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee

And some stacking the deck:

16.) Willa Cather/One of Ours

17.) W. Somerset Maugham/The Razor's Edge

18.) R. L. Stevenson/The Black Arrow

19.) Johann von Goethe/Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship

20.) Henryk Sienkewicz/Quo Vadis

I think that chapter-a-day readalong of Quo Vadis (which I didn't originally commit to) may be going on now so that would timely, but other than that I don't have any strong preferences.

Have you read any of these? Which look good to you?

And happy spinning to all!

  1. I love Willa Cather and Somerset Maugham, so I'd always vote for one of those. :)

  2. Hm, I can't have Black Arrow if you get it! I thought Quo Vadis was pretty fun when I read it some years ago. And A Distant Mirror is fantastic. Good luck!

    1. I thought about putting it in the same spot, but I never get those when I do it, so I figured it would just jinx it even worse!

  3. Funny. I'm reading both Quo Vadis and A Distant Mirror at the moment. I also have Travels with a Donkey on my list although I didn't get it for this spin. I'll be interested in your thoughts on The Black Arrow when you read it. Best of luck for Sunday's choice!

    1. Thanks!

I knew there was that Quo Vadis readalong, but I suspected once I started it, I'd just want to carry through.

I don't actually have a strong preference--any of them will be fine.

  4. i read the Tuchman when it first came out and liked it; don't recall reading "The Black Arrow' but i must have at some point; i know i read "Count Robert" because i wrote a post on it last year; it was good, i thought... i liked the Quincy too; i read it again because i hadn't remembered i already read it once and it was just as interesting as the first time, haha. Razor's edge was a bit quiet, it seemed to me...

    1. I remember seeing your post about Count Robert--I'd already put it on my Classics Club list, but I was encouraged when I saw yours.

De Quincey can be pretty fun, but I've never read this one & I've owned for it for a while.

  6. I loved One of Ours and A Lost Lady is also good. And I think I'm going to add Cousin Bette to my next Classics Club list, so I'd love to read about that one. Good luck with your spin pick!

  7. What a list. I have only read Quo Vadis, really interesting, so I hope you get that one. Mind you, same as me, I'm sure you wouldn't mind reading any on the list. Good luck with the draw.

And I see, same as Karen ^^, you doubled up some books, I'll remember that for my next list because I'm getting close to that magic number.

Thank you for visiting my list earlier.

    1. Quo Vadis would be a good spin, especially since others are reading it now.

      Thanks for dropping by!

    1. I saw a college production years ago and remember it as very funny, but I've never read it.

  9. I'm reading Quo Vadis with the Chapter-a-Day group, and it seems to be just the right pace for me. You definitely should join in.

    1. Interesting. I didn't plan on joining in because I thought if I liked it, I'd probably want to read it faster. But if it turns up the spin, I'll at least partly jump in.

  10. That's a great list. I really enjoyed both A Distant Mirror and Cousin Bette! I have a different Willa Cather book on my spin list, but I would like to read the two on your list at some point too.

    1. Those would be both be fun. Willa Cather is so great. Those are the last of her novels for me.

  11. Are we voting on what we hope a random number will be? Then, picking one I have not read but want to read about, I vote for The Black Arrow.

    1. That is the name of the game. I also like when a blogger gets a book I don't know.

  12. I will hold thumbs for you that the spin lands on number 9. Quo Vadis is such a strong and beautiful classic.

I won't mind reading number 9 on my list as well. I will be a re-read, but one of those that you can read again and again and again.
